To become an Entrepreneur, or not to become an entrepreneur. That is the question.

Recently I was asked for advice from a former coworker about becoming an entrepreneur. She asked, "What are your tips for entrepreneurship and just doing it?"

I think the absence of a decision is still a choice. If you're sitting there thinking "what if" whatever that looks like, you are making a decision to not pursue that decision. As it relates to entrepreneurship, often we get comfortable in our careers and think, well it doesn't make sense for me to leave this job - it pays so well and I might get promoted.

Maybe you're happy with your pay and maybe you think you'll feel fulfilled with the next promotion. But if you're thinking about entrepreneurship, it might be worth just biting the bullet and diving in. A lot of people are afraid to leave their jobs, but if you have a job now you can get always get another job. Even if you try and fail, you'll still have learned something. That something will directly apply to another job.

I think there are two types of people in the world. Entrepreneurs and people who are happy with their paycheques and their retirement funds. If you want to be an entrepreneur, there's only one way to do it - pull the trigger, give it your everything and see how it goes. If you fail, you fail. Taking that risk is part of the process. You might have to rely on your family financially, or you might have to live very cheaply, or you might have to sell your soul to the bank. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you'll make it happen.

If you want to make it happen, take the first step. What does your business look like? Can you start while you're still working? Do you need to draft a resignation letter to your boss? Whatever it is, you need to take that step. Then take the next one, and the next one and there you have it - you're an entrepreneur.
