Understanding Keyword Targeting

Understanding Keyword Targeting

If you have ever heard of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), you have probably heard the term Keyword Targeting before. Keyword targeting helps bring targeted traffic to your website by integrating keywords relevant to your product or service throughout your website and ad copy to improve visibility in search engines.

This requires comprehensive keyword research to determine which keywords your business should be targeting.

What are targeted keywords?

Targeted keywords refer to the phrases or terms your target audience and visitors search when they are looking for solutions or information related to your business. Targeting keywords lead to more long-term and often short-term organic search traffic for your website.

Why should I use targeted keywords?

When working on your SEO strategy, targeted keywords are an essential part of of this. Google and other search engines will use this information to determine which content is relevant to a particular search query, and how the page should rank for a search term. That’s what gives a web page its search ranking.

Strategy to increase keyword targeted traffic

After completing your keyword research and have a list of keywords to use, you can start your keyword strategy. To begin, start by looking at the level of competition for keywords being used by competitor brands, and decide if you have any chance of budgeting or ranking for these terms.

A good rule of thumb is, if websites with domain authority of above 70 hold the top six or seven places, it’s probably not worth competing for these keywords. In this case it is better to focus on long-tail keywords, where there is less competition to rank.

How many keywords should I target?

For every webpage, including each blog post, you should aim to target one focus keyword. Be sure to consider the keywords you may have ranked for in the past, as you want to avoid ranking cannibalism. It is usually the case in the natural evolution of a page that related keywords will be used. This is not a problem and gives Google more understanding about the intent of your keywords.

How do I use keywords effectively?

Generally you should use your main or focus keyword within your first paragraph. Next, use that keyword in the body content and snippet. The best practice is to include latent semantic indexing (LSI) keywords rather than the exact keyword every time. Remember that keyword density is no longer a ranking factor.
